Chapter 12
Rachna was more determined than ever to nail her routines. She wasn’t going to let anything distract her. Her short program was getting better with each practice. More and more, she was starting to feel like a phoenix. A part of her wanted to change her double axel to a triple, but she still wanted to nail the jump. It was safer to do the double than risk falling on a triple. She decided to leave the short program as it was. However, she still had a plan to attempt a quad on her free program. She wanted to surprise people.
I’m back and they need to know that. She decided. If I can pull this off, I will have the audience at my feet. They will remember me.
They were now down to the final weeks of the competition. Jenny came over to the rink one day with the costumes. She had taken Rachna’s measurements and given them to her designer. “I think you’ll be very pleased with them. I even got her to make you an exhibition outfit. You didn’t tell me what you wanted for that so I came up with something. What do you think of them?”
Rachna took a look at her short program outfit. As expected, it was all warm colors of red, orange, and yellow. The collar, top, and sleeves were lined with rhinestones. There were some hair accessories to go with them made of red and orange silk. She held it against her body and looked down. “Oh, this is perfect! This would make me look like I’m on fire!” She twirled around a few times in place. “I can’t wait to wear it!”
“I think you will look amazing. Now check out free skate costume.”
The free skate costume was a lot lighter with white and blue fabrics. It was much simpler than her short program with rhinestones on the collar. The skirt was just a little longer than that of her other costume. The hair accessories were the same color as snow and resembled feathers. “Oh, my God, it is beautiful! It’s such a contrast to the other outfit and it works!”
“I’m glad you like them. Here’s the outfit for your exhibition. I went with a simple design on it. The fabric shimmers, but it’s very soft.” Jenny held out a lilac outfit that sparkled in the light. The skirt for this costume was made of layers of silk. It made the purple stand out, but felt thin enough between her fingers. “Come on, tug on it! The material may be light, but it’s tough!”
Rachna touched it. “Yeah, I love this too. I think you made great choices. Thank your designer for me please.”
“I will. Anyway, after some practice, I was wondering if you wanted to get some lunch. This time, I want to eat something with more carbs.” Jenny winked at her. “I’m hankering for pizza.”
“Will your coaches allow it? I mean, I don’t want to get yelled at for this. I’m getting enough yelling from fans and other skaters for just for being around you,” Rachna sighed.
